The Imaginators learnt all about food chains today! My older Imaginators started off the morning with me so I let them watch a little video summarizing the concept of the food chain and then we discussed and came up with lots of different examples!
Of course we had to put an artistic spin on this very scientific topic so I showed the kiddos how to create a 'stylized' version of the animals in their food chain. Then I showed them how to depict the food chain as a series of animals with open mouths... this is a concept I found online but I think it is so great at driving the ideas home and it's super cute :) To make sure the stylized versions of the animals were recognizable I explained that they had to make sure to keep the thing that made the animals distinctive... a cheetah has spots, a lion has a mane and a snake has fangs!
The kiddos used the white boards to experiment with their ideas before they committed them to paper. They wrote out their food chains, tried drawing their 'stylized' versions then they chose their coloured paper and drew them out animal by animal and stuck them one inside the other. I think they did a terrific job!
Our youngest Imaginators joined me in the afternoon and for them we managed to do the same project, but we all went through the steps to create the same food chain :) Take a look at our little ones :)

Today the Imaginators got to walk in some very big shoes... the Mad Scientists transported them back to prehistoric times to when dinosaurs walked the earth and got them imagining what they ate, how big they were and what they may have looked like. They all got to be mini-paleontologists and dug for dino bones and put them back together. The show was tremendously interactive and loads of fun! YAY for Mad Scientists for bringing science alive for our little Imaginators! To cool down from all this action we had a few rounds of pictionary. But of course everything with these Imaginators turns into excitement.
Eggs, tadpole, froglet, frog... who is the cutest of them all? I think it has to be the little froggie we painted this afternoon hands down! LOL
After learning all about the life cycle of a frog this morning these little Imaginators came bouncing into my art room to paint a grown up frog :) Of course we had to cutesy him up a bit :)

Today the Imaginators read all about whales, porpoises and other cetaceans in the fun book A Whale of a Tale by Dr. Suess! So for our art session we zeroed in on just the gorgeous and humongous whale... so naturally they took in some whale facts before we got started.
Then it was time to set the scene for their afternoon session with our beautiful whale paintings :)
I demonstrated how to draw the whale and then they got down to painting oceans and skies and they put their whales in jumping out of the water or peeping out of the surface... what their whale was doing was completely up to them ;P
After our art session we all took a break for some much needed outdoor time :) Take a peek at the Imaginators at play!

Huh?? What is a terrarium? Well our tiniest Imaginators spent the morning at The Reading Garden exploring the book How a Seed Grows so I thought it fitting to use this little terrarium painting to bring their day full circle :)
Of course, we talked about what they did with Aunty Reiko and then I showed them pictures of what a terrarium could look like. It's just like an aquarium but for plants! I found some cool little facts on NASA's Climate Kids site that I shared and then it was on to drawing and painting! We drew the terrarium from a template I made just so all the kiddos started out with a space that was the right size. Then they drew their line for soil and put in the parts of the flower... stem, petals, roots etc. They drew in oil pastels and painted in using liquid watercolours. I got to use my favourite oil pastel resist technique for the roots and the reaction never ceases to make me smile. Take a look at our terrific terrariums :)

Today's book 'The Tiny Seed' is one of Eric Carle's best sellers and I just love everything by Eric Carle because his illustrations are always so beautiful. So for our art piece today we took a walk in his shoes and took our time piecing together the scenes from his book using coloured tissue paper and other painted papers... but I also found this inspiring video of an artist who creates some amazing works of art just by gluing textured papers onto a canvas! I love showing children that there is no limit on what you can use to create a beautiful work of art.
So the kiddos took that in and we started our project for the day.
The response to that video was "wow.. that's so cool... we going to do that?" Well, we took inspiration from it! Take a look at our results :)
