For Mother's Day this year the Doodlebugs are working hard on making a gorgeous little flower pot collage. We're making all the elements from scratch so this one will take more than one session but I know that you know it will be worth the wait! Today they are mottling the background for our art piece and prepping the parts of the flower... so of course we're also learning as we go. So they're naming the parts, petals, stem, leaf, seeds! We're not showing roots in this art piece but they know they're there :) Take a look at our progress... but Mummies please you're only getting a sneak peek because I don't want to spoil the 'surprise' ;) Follow me on Instagram #artypantsstudiott if you enjoy the overload of cuteness or if you want to keep up to date on what's happening at the studio!

The illustrations in this book are absolutely gorgeous so I knew my Doodlebugs would enjoy recreating these little birds using our painted paper from last week! The story tells of a little girl and her father waiting for cherries to grow on their tree so they could make a delicious pie. It describes the stages the tree goes through and it is told in a wonderful rhythmic voice :) After listening and looking at the pictures they were given bird templates and told to make a picture of a bird on a cherry tree branch. Collage art is always a hit with my Doodlebugs because they get to do two of the things they love most in the world... cut and stick! Cutting is especially important for some key reasons:
Aren't these Doodlebugs precious? Take a look and see what I mean. Now that we all know what a habitat is and have them painted and ready for their occupants, it's time to draw out the animals that are going to live in these habitats! For this part the Picassos drew their animals on a piece of white paper and painted them in. They cut them out and stuck them into place. Of course they could choose to draw one animal or several and position across the piece. Voila! Gorgeous animals in their habitats! I'm so proud of these young artists because a lot of factors came into play. They had to make decisions about composition, they also had to mix colours and of course focus on perspective to make their animals look in proportion to their habitat. Congrats Picassos! Job well done :) For the other parts of this lesson see below Part 1 Part 2
Today we worked a little science into our art class! We talked about what makes a habitat a home. The Picassos were asked to choose an animal to research so this video is our jumping off point for our discussion.
Our task today is simply to choose a habitat and really focus on what it looks like and then sketch a scene from that habitat. The art concepts highlighted today are again perspective... looking at the foreground, middle ground and background of our piece. Also paying attention to scale and placement. The Picassos are also going to get to stretch their creative muscles as they come up with their compositions all on their own... no sample piece to look at today... only their understanding of what will be found in their habitat. This lesson will take my Picassos a few sessions but it promises to be extremely fun in the best way possible! We'll all be learning as we create our beautiful pieces of art. What is it about stamping that little children love so much? The Doodlebugs went to town this afternoon stamping some gorgeous flowers and decorating their own personalized flower pots! Take a look at their colourful creations!
Today's book 'The Tiny Seed' is one of Eric Carle's best sellers and I just love everything by Eric Carle because his illustrations are always so beautiful. So for our art piece today we took a walk in his shoes and took our time piecing together the scenes from his book using coloured tissue paper and other painted papers... but I also found this inspiring video of an artist who creates some amazing works of art just by gluing textured papers onto a canvas! I love showing children that there is no limit on what you can use to create a beautiful work of art.
So the kiddos took that in and we started our project for the day.
The response to that video was "wow.. that's so cool... we going to do that?" Well, we took inspiration from it! Take a look at our results :)
See what they did later that day at The Reading Garden.
Who remembers the story of Chicken Little and Henny Penny? In my day it was Chicken Licken... but this version is great too :) This has to be one of my favourites and the version I have happens to have the most gorgeous illustrations... win, win! I read the story for the Doodlebugs today and we had lots of fun repeating the lines in the book... "The sky is falling, the sky is falling... we must run for our lives!!"
We painted a scene from the book and the children got to choose if they wanted to make Chicken Little or Henny Penny. For this project I got to pull out our painted papers that we made last week. They used templates to trace Chicken Little and Henny Penny out on these pretty papers and painted the background of grass and sky for them to be stuck on afterward. Take a look at the process and how they turned out. Collage techniques are always fun and peacocks are arguably one of the most beautiful birds in the world so put the two together and you have a magical formular for fun and whimsy :) The Picassos got to create a colourful peacock by first making some painted paper and then drawing him out on the back in separate parts. We then cut the parts out and stuck them together on a contrasting background! Of course adding a bit of sparkle never hurt any art project in the eyes of an 8 year old... so why not! So the Thursday afternoon Picassos finished up their collage Peacocks... the pictures will come in slowly but surely :) See more of our collage projects below!
Doodlebug Poinsettias The Tortoise and the Hare Sailboats at Sunset Mixed Media Poinsettias Don't forget to like this post and share it with your friends! The little ones weren't left out from our Poinsettia fun! They got to sponge paint and recreate these vibrant beautiful flowers as well. This is such an adaptable project that it really was perfect for both age groups with just the smallest of tweaks :)
See for yourself the gorgeous poinsettias they made. All frame-worthy in my humble opinion! Merry Christmas everyone ;P 'Tis the season for poinsettias! So we sponge painted them and created a terrific 3D collage using some tissue paper to create the illusion of mulch and cut out terrific plant pots out of brightly coloured construction paper. This was all set off against a black background to make the lovely colours pop. So I think it's fair to say the Picassos finished off the term in great style quite befitting of the season! Merry Christmas to all... I'll see you at camp and stay tuned for lots, lots more creative and fun art projects! Thursday Picassos take their turn at these gorgeous poinsettias and their first foray into collage!
