Last week the Picassos drew Boissiere House (see them in action here). So this week of course they are going to trace their beautiful drawings using Black Sharpie and paint them in using watercolours.
This was a challenging drawing but I have to say all my Picassos did a stellar job! These paintings are definitely frame-worthy parents!
Thursday Picassos take their turn at painting their Boissierre House drawings! More gorgeous paintings waiting for a frame!

Boissiere House is a gorgoeus part of our Trinidadian architectural history. This painted lady as she is fondly called got lots of attention in class today. The Picassos were a little taken aback when they saw the detail involved but everyone just loved the overall look of the old house.
Of course we talked a little about it's history as well as a bit of it's present. Preservation works done on the property recently earned the Sammy family a historic restoration award! Thanks Sammy family :) Then we got down to drawing this beauty. We started off with the roof lines and the put in major walls. Once these were in they got down to drawing in the basic shapes, putting in details in windows, doors and bushes. Of course this took up our class time so they'll be painted next week!
Thursday afternoon Picassos got started drawing Boissiere House today!
This is such a cute little story and the art that goes with it is equally appealing!
To recreate the look of our little multicoloured chameleon the Doodlebugs got to play with liquid watercolours. We used the wet on wet technique on watercolour paper and really just watched as the liquid watercolours bled into each other. They used their brushes to dot paint onto a blank wet chameleon and the colours moved, swirled and 'mixed' in together. Next, they drew in grass and sky and of course some multi-coloured flowers etc to explain why our chameleon friend was so colourful! Ooh and last but not least... googly eyes to complete our chameleon's crazy look! lol My Picassos got to practice using some of the watercolour techniques they learnt last week and also got busy drawing radial designs of flowers in this simple but beautiful project. They were given an idea sheet with different flowers and instructed to choose three different flowers and draw them in pencil, trace them over using black sharpies and then paint them using watercolours. Most of them got to paint in the background and applied the salt technique. They're not finished yet but they are already so beautiful! Updated - 26th April - Picassos finished their flowers ;) Thursday Picassos tackled the radial watercolour flowers today... masterful results :)
While this is not the first time my Picassos have used watercolours in class I didn't want to turn our foray into the wonderful world of watercolours into something too technical so I decided to save the formal experimentation with techniques until now. We spent the entire class looking at the behaviour of watercolours when used in different ways and put with varying materials. I pre-drew sections on a piece of watercolour paper and labelled them with each of our test subjects or techniques. We went through 12 different techniques in turn...
This piece took two classes to complete because the drawing was so detailed, and whilte they all enjoyed learning about the parts of the castle and drawing the intricate details, boy were they thrilled to start painting! Be sure to check out the drawing process in Part 1 of this project as well if you missed it! Check out the results of my Tuesday Picassos below :) Continuing on our fairy tale theme from a couple weeks back today we are going to paint a castle fit for a Doodlebug prince or princess! So we reviewed the general shape of a castle and talked about the different parts. The moat commonly found at the front, the great big door that could block invaders and of course the basic design with all it's high walls and towers! I called their attention to the shape of the windows and the brick design on the roof tops and we discussed how these were used for brave knights to position themselves against to shoot arrows on approaching invaders. Then they got down to drawing their castles and each child put in their own details! They were painted using watercolours. Take a look :) Castles are a favourite for both boys and girls for different reasons of course... but their universal appeal make them a great subject for the art room! Lots of line drawing and discussion of scale goes into setting the stage for this piece of artwork and of course we had to make sure everyone knew the basic parts of the castle as well! I gave the Picassos lots of ideas for how the doors and windows etc. should look and had them think about what building materials would typically be used so their drawings would come out looking like the real thing. They were drawn in pencil and sharpies. Since these drawings are so detailed we needed a whole class just for drawing, but they'll get painted in the next class! Here's the work in progress though :) Thursday Picassos take their turn drawing out our castles! Well, it's Halloween and while I don't personally celebrate the occasion I find it hard to ignore the many enticing projects that crop up just by adding a little boo-factor :)
So this afternoon the little ones got busy drawing some not-so-scary monsters... I gave them a few options for the main parts, body, arms, legs and eyes. The rest I left up to their own creative genius and this is what happened. Owls are really endearing creatures in the art room... they are easily recognizable and simple enough for small hands to recreate but they offer just the right amount of challenge as well. But of course before we got down to the business of drawing and painting the owls... we got to know a bit more about these nocturnal creatures. Then, I demonstrated a simple method to draw an owl using recognizable letters and shapes and the Doodlebugs got busy drawing in oil pastels. They then painted them using liquid watercolours! Check out these creations and you'll see what I mean! |
Welcome!
Be a fly on the wall in our art room! Take a look at what we do, how we do it and the smiles that I get to see week after week :) Archives
