This was a fun project that focused on creating seamless colour gradations. First the Picassos painted the gradations ,which really can be simple for some and not so simple for others. Next they sketched a city skyline on black construction paper to mimic a silhouette and cut it out. The black paper city was then stuck on the horizon line of the page. For this we looked at pictures of Port-of-Spain's waterfront and talked about the shapes of the buildings and they got down to sketching out their building silhouettes. I also pointed out that we were using warm colours for the sky and cool colours for the sea! Stunning results from my Picassos! Good job kiddos :)

Colour Theory is one of the foundation principles of art... and at Arty Pants Studio we highlight that every chance we get! Here are some of the colour-theory focused lessons we've done in the past.
It's about time for the Doodlebugs to do a little recap on the colour wheel but of course we have to turn it into a creative little experience. So today they drew an umbrella that we used to demonstrate the colour wheel. After drawing the umbrella, they drew in either a raincoat dress for girls or a pair of pant legs for the boys and some rain boots. Of course they couldn't wait to start painting and mixing colours... I practically had to withhold the paint until it was painting time so they wouldn't jump ahead! See how cute they turned out... See more art like this in our Colour Wheel catergory!
Don't forget to like this post and share the fun we're having Arty Pants Studio! We started off the term mixing tints and shades and since this is such an important part of the art curriculum I thought I would reiterate it with this cool little jellyfish project! We drew 5 concentric circles on our page and the Picassos were told to start off mixing the first tint and use it to paint the smallest circle. The circles were painted in oder of increasing intensity from the lightest value to the darkest to give the impression of looking up into the sunlight from the bottom of the ocean. Next the jellyfish were drawn in using different coloured chalk pastels and smudged to create more depth and value as well. The bottom of the ocean complete with plant life etc were also added. Take a look at our results! Thursday afternoon Picassos join in on the under the sea action! As part of the CAC for SEA children are required to learn the difference between a tint and a shade and have some experience in creating them. This sounds kinda serious... and it is, but that doesn't mean it can't also be fun! For this project the Picassos were told they were going to design a store window for an ice cream shop. This ice cream shop sold only one flavour of ice cream which would be the pure colour in the middle and we would create tints of this colour by adding drops of white and shades by adding drops of black. In our painting tints are below the pure hue and shades are above. They also had to name their ice cream parlour and put the name in the painting like a sign! As predicted there was a lot of fuss over the name chosen... lol. Take a look at their creations! And my Thursday afternoon Picassos took their turn at mixing tints and shades... see how they did! Well at long last it's the first day of art class with my Picassos and we jumped right in! I decided to start the term off with a cute lesson on the colour wheel! We looked at the colour wheel and talked about the different colours... primary, secondary and got a bit into colour schemes. Then we looked at our friend the chameleon... You have to admit... he's a pretty cool dude. Can you think of a more fun way to demonstrate the different colours on the colour wheel than with this guy? Here's how they turned out. My second group of Picassos loved this mixing paint exercise... I understand we have a couple aspiring scientists and chemists in the mix so it's no surprise!
